BOTTOM LINE

Make things with things made from recyclables. “Green” design innovators are coming up with building materials produced from all sorts of stuff, from plastic bottles to cardboard boxes and old newspapers. Materials made from recycled plastic is an especially good option because plastic doesn’t biodegrade and the water savings can add up to 86 percent versus other building materials.

Avoid tropical woods and look for FSC-certified lumber. Forty percent of all the timber in the world comes from illegally forested areas, which means that water rights and sustainable management programs aren’t being adhered to. That means water and lots of paradises are being lost to reckless operators.

Turns out that that 1970’s staple of flooring, linoleum, is made from all-natural materials and needs a fraction of the water that vinyl does to be manufactured. Yeah, baby!
